sonar

Underwater echo detection

Sonar is a system that uses sound waves to detect and locate objects underwater, working much like radar does with radio waves in air.

The term comes from "sound navigation and ranging." Ships and submarines use sonar to navigate, find other vessels, and map the ocean floor.

Sonar can be active, sending out pulses and listening for echoes, or passive, simply listening for sounds made by other objects.

The submarine's sonar detected an approaching vessel.
