upwelling

Cold water rising

Upwelling is the movement of deep water rising toward the surface, especially in oceans where cold, nutrient-rich water ascends to replace warmer surface water pushed aside by winds.

These zones support abundant marine life.

Figuratively, an upwelling is any surge from below: an upwelling of grief, an upwelling of popular anger.
