square-rigger
Wind-powered tall ship
A square-rigger is a sailing ship whose principal sails are square—set perpendicular to the length of the hull rather than fore-and-aft.
The great merchant ships and naval vessels of the age of sail were square-riggers: The square-rigger rounded Cape Horn in heavy seas.
The term distinguishes these ships from schooners and other fore-and-aft rigged vessels.
