staysail

Mast-to-bow canvas

A staysail is a triangular sail set on a stay—one of the lines running from a mast to the bow or another mast.

Staysails fill the spaces between the principal sails on a vessel, adding power in moderate winds: We hoisted the staysail as the breeze picked up.

Common types include the jib and the inner forestaysail.
