yawl

Smaller mast astern

A yawl is a small sailing boat with two masts—the mainmast forward and a shorter mizzenmast positioned behind the rudder post.

This distinguishes it from a ketch, where the mizzenmast sits forward of the rudder.

Yawl also refers to a ship's small boat, typically rowed by four or six oars: The crew lowered the yawl to go ashore.
