windjammer

Large square-rigger

A windjammer is a large sailing ship, particularly the commercial cargo vessels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that relied entirely on wind power.

The term originally carried a slightly dismissive tone from steamship sailors who considered sail outdated, but it later became affectionate.

Today windjammer often refers to tall ships used for training or tourism cruises.

We booked a windjammer cruise through the Caribbean.
