buccaneers

Spanish ship attackers

Buccaneers were pirates who operated in the Caribbean during the 17th century, raiding Spanish ships and settlements.

The term now applies broadly to any pirates or, figuratively, to bold adventurers who operate outside conventional rules: corporate buccaneers, financial buccaneers.
