Cape of Good Hope

Southern African headland

The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland on South Africa's Atlantic coast, near the southern tip of Africa.

Portuguese explorers named it in the late 15th century, as rounding it meant ships could reach the Indian Ocean and Asian trade routes.

The phrase sometimes serves as a metaphor for a turning point after which success seems possible: Getting past the interview felt like rounding the Cape of Good Hope.
