yardarm
Mast's horizontal extension
A yardarm is either end of a yard—the horizontal spar that supports a square sail on a sailing ship.
The phrase the sun is over the yardarm signals that it's late enough in the day to start drinking, from the naval tradition of the first rum ration when the sun rose past the yardarm.
