Armada

Named naval force

The Armada, short for the Spanish Armada, was the massive naval fleet sent by Spain to invade England in 1588.

Its defeat by English forces and storms became a turning point in European history and a symbol of failed military ambition.

The name appears in historical contexts and as a metaphor for doomed large-scale ventures. (Lowercase armada is any large fleet.)
