skeg

Surfboard steering fin

A skeg is a fin-like projection on the underside of a boat or surfboard, extending from the hull near the stern.

On boats, it protects the propeller and rudder and helps maintain directional stability.

On surfboards, skegs (also called fins) provide grip and control during turns: I snapped a skeg on the reef.
