rabbet

Stepped wood notch

A rabbet is a step-shaped recess cut along the edge or face of a piece of wood, typically so another piece can fit into it to form a joint.

The rabbet joint is common in cabinetry, drawer construction, and picture frames.

As a verb, to rabbet is to cut such a recess or to join pieces using one: He rabbeted the back panel into the cabinet sides.
