outboard

Stern-mounted engine

Outboard describes position away from the center of a vessel, vehicle, or aircraft—toward the outer edge.

An outboard motor mounts on the outside of a boat's stern rather than inside the hull: We rented a small skiff with a 25-horsepower outboard.

The word works as adjective, adverb, or noun: the outboard engine, mounted outboard, fire up the outboard.
