sternpost

Rudder's vertical support

A sternpost is the main vertical timber or beam at the stern of a ship, rising from the keel to support the rudder.

It forms the backbone of the vessel's rear structure: The rudder hangs from the sternpost on heavy pintles.

In wooden shipbuilding, the sternpost was one of the first pieces erected after laying the keel.
