inboard

Toward the centerline

Inboard describes something positioned toward the center of a vessel, vehicle, or aircraft, as opposed to the outer edge.

An inboard motor is mounted inside a boat's hull rather than hanging off the stern.

The term extends to aircraft and automobiles: the inboard engine, inboard brakes.

As an adverb, it indicates direction toward the centerline: Slide inboard to make room.
