Retractable sailing fin

A daggerboard is a retractable centerboard on a sailboat that slides vertically through a slot in the hull rather than pivoting.

It provides lateral resistance to prevent the boat from drifting sideways when sailing upwind.

Unlike a fixed keel, a daggerboard can be raised for shallow water or beaching: We pulled up the daggerboard to navigate the sandbar.
