skegs
Surfboard stabilizing fins
Skegs are fin-like projections on the underside of watercraft, typically found at the stern of boats, surfboards, and kayaks.
They provide directional stability and help prevent sideways drift.
On motorboats, a skeg protects the propeller and lower unit from damage when running in shallow water.
Surfers and wakeboarders use the term for the removable fins on their boards: I snapped a skeg on that reef.
