outboard motor
Detachable boat engine
An outboard motor is a self-contained propulsion unit mounted on the outside of a boat's stern, combining engine, gearbox, and propeller in one detachable package.
Unlike inboard engines built into the hull, outboards can be tilted up for shallow water or removed entirely: We lifted the outboard motor onto the dock for winter storage.
Often shortened to outboard.
