centerboard
Sailboat's pivoting keel
A centerboard is a retractable fin that projects downward from the hull of a sailboat, providing lateral resistance to prevent the boat from drifting sideways when sailing into the wind.
Unlike a fixed keel, it can be raised into a slot in the hull for shallow water or beaching: We raised the centerboard to navigate the shoals.
