rib
Curved torso bone
A rib is one of the bones in vertebrates that start at the back and curve around, forming a cavity that protects the vital organs.
Together, these are called ribs.
The plural noun also designates food when the ribs still have the flesh attached and come from an animal that we eat: pork ribs come from swine, short ribs from cattle.
If something is ribbed, it is parallel ridges in it, reminiscent of the bones.
To rib someone is to tease them in a good-natured way.
