mortar

Grinding bowl or binder

Mortar has two unrelated meanings.

One is a bowl in which substances are ground with a pestle—the mortar and pestle of pharmacies and kitchens.

The other is a paste of cement, lime, and sand used to bind bricks or stones: The mortar between the bricks was crumbling.

A mortar is also a short-barreled cannon that fires shells in high arcs, used for lobbing explosives over walls or into trenches.
