racing

Chasing the checkered

Racing is competitive speed—the act of trying to go faster than others, whether on foot, in vehicles, or on animals.

Horse racing, car racing, drag racing.

As an adjective, racing describes things designed for or involved in such competition: a racing yacht, racing stripes, a racing heart.

That last sense extends to anything beating or moving rapidly, often from excitement or fear.
