grep

Text search command

Grep is a command-line tool that searches text for patterns matching a regular expression, printing lines that contain matches.

The name comes from a command sequence in an early text editor: global/regular expression/print.

By extension, to grep means to search through data for specific patterns: Let me grep through these logs for the error message.

The term has spread beyond computing to mean any systematic search: I'll grep my email for that conversation.
