unshelled

In its armor

Unshelled describes something that has had its shell removed: unshelled peanuts, unshelled shrimp.

Confusingly, it can also mean still in the shell—not yet shelled.

Context usually clarifies: if you're buying unshelled nuts at the store, they're typically in their shells; if a recipe calls for unshelled shrimp, it usually means already peeled.
