plastron

Fencer's chest guard

A plastron is the flat underside of a turtle or tortoise shell—the belly plate that complements the domed carapace above.

The term extends to similar protective coverings: the padded chest protector worn in fencing, or the starched front panel of a formal shirt.

In some insects, a plastron is a thin layer of air trapped against the body that allows underwater breathing.
