limpet

Conical shore snail

A limpet is a small marine mollusk with a conical shell that clings tenaciously to rocks along shorelines.

This gripping ability gives rise to the figurative use: someone who sticks to a person or position with stubborn persistence is said to cling like a limpet.

A limpet mine is an explosive device designed to attach magnetically to the hull of a ship, named for the mollusk's characteristic grip.
