shotgun
Smoothbore hunting firearm
A shotgun is a firearm with a smooth bore that fires shells containing multiple pellets, spreading on impact—effective for hunting birds and close-range combat.
Shotgun extends to things characterized by wide spread or side-by-side arrangement: shotgun approach, shotgun wedding (hastily arranged, often due to pregnancy).
To ride shotgun is to sit in the front passenger seat, from the armed guard position on stagecoaches.
As a verb, to shotgun a beer is to puncture the can and drink rapidly.
