lob

High, gentle throw

To lob is to throw or hit something in a high, gentle arc—the opposite of a hard, direct throw.

In tennis, a lob sends the ball high over an opponent's head.

You might lob a ball to a child or lob a crumpled paper toward a trash can.

The noun lob describes such a throw or shot: She hit a perfect lob over the net.

Figuratively, to lob a question or criticism is to deliver it casually or provocatively: The reporter lobbed a softball question at the candidate.
