strafe

shoot from above

To strafe is to attack ground targets from a low-flying aircraft, typically with machine-gun fire: Fighter planes strafed the convoy.

The word comes from a German World War I slogan meaning "punish." In video games, strafe has taken on a different meaning—moving sideways while facing forward, a basic maneuver for dodging enemy fire: Strafe left to avoid the rockets.
