business
Trade and commerce
The idea of purposeful, goal-oriented activity is central to business.
It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that business is formed from busy + ness; partly because of the shortened pronunciation of business, and partly because busyness does the work of busy + ness.
Business usually connotes the involvement of money, except in the case of personal business.
You can own a business, you can do business overseas, or you may have to attend to some business with your in-laws.
In a more general way, business can designate a matter or affair (the whole business was embarrassing), or someone’s personal concern (I don’t think this is any of your business).
