boss
Person in charge
The commonest use of boss is as a noun to denote a person in charge.
That person bosses others around, though you can do that without actually being a boss – and thereby make yourself unpopular and bossy.
A different word boss is related to the verb emboss and denotes various things that stick out from their surroundings.
Boss is also a dated slang adjective used appreciatively: Last night’s concert was totally boss.
