increment

One step up

An increment is a small increase or addition, typically one in a regular series: The thermostat adjusts in one-degree increments.

The word implies measured, systematic change rather than random fluctuation.

In programming, to increment a variable is to increase its value by a fixed amount, usually one.

The opposite is decrement.
