guardian
One who shields
A guardian is someone who watches over and protects another person or thing.
In legal terms, a guardian has formal responsibility for someone who cannot care for themselves—typically a child whose parents have died or an incapacitated adult: The court appointed her as guardian of her nephew.
More broadly, guardians protect places, traditions, or values: guardians of democracy, a guardian of the gate.
The word implies ongoing vigilance and protective authority rather than momentary defense.
