decibel
Noise intensity measure
A decibel is a unit measuring the intensity of sound.
The scale is logarithmic—each ten-decibel increase represents a tenfold increase in sound energy.
Normal conversation runs about 60 decibels; a jet engine at close range exceeds 140.
Decibels also measure signal strength in electronics and telecommunications: The antenna boosts the signal by three decibels.
