sponsor

Event funding source

A sponsor is a person or organization that provides money or support for something, often in exchange for publicity: The race was funded by corporate sponsors.

To sponsor is to provide such backing: The company sponsors a Little League team.

A sponsor may also be someone who vouches for another—introducing a candidate for membership, supporting an immigrant's visa application, or guiding someone through a twelve-step program.

In legislative contexts, to sponsor a bill is to introduce and champion it.
