port of call

Scheduled harbor stop

A port of call is a scheduled stop for a ship during a voyage, where passengers may disembark temporarily and cargo may be loaded or unloaded.

The phrase extends beyond maritime use to describe any planned stop on a journey or itinerary: Our first port of call was the hardware store, then the nursery.

It can also refer figuratively to a place one regularly visits or consults: The library was always my first port of call for research.
