data

Numbers for analysis

Data is information consisting of numerous separate items: The data from the study indicated that the city’s population is decreasing by five percent each year.

Technically, data is a plural noun, but the singular datum is rarely seen.

There is no good argument for insisting that data be treated as plural: The data were collected over a period of weeks. The data in the study confirms what researchers have long believed.
