trade

Exchange of goods

The main associations with trade, a noun and verb, are with business, work, and goods.

In these contexts, it is more broadly used in British than in American English (trade union, the motor trade).

The most general noun use is to denote the buying and selling of goods, especially when done internationally.

A trade can also be a single business pursued as a livelihood (the plumbing trade), or an instance of exchanging one thing for another (a favorable trade).

The verb trade can mean barter or engage in business: They stopped trading in cocoa.

If you trade on something, you use it to your advantage.
