drydock

Vessel repair basin

A drydock is an enclosure that can be drained of water, allowing ships to be built, repaired, or inspected below the waterline.

The vessel enters while the dock is flooded, then the water is pumped out, leaving the hull accessible.

As a verb, to drydock a ship is to put it in such a facility: The destroyer was drydocked for hull repairs.
