date
Sweet palm fruit
Two different English words have settled on the spelling date, which explains their very different meanings.
One date is the edible fruit of a desert palm, which has countless cultivars.
The other date is a point on a calendar corresponding to a day: What happened on this date in 1950?
When scientists or researchers date something, they determine the date (or more general time period) in which it arose, flourished, or was used.
When two people date, or when one dates the other, they are romantically involved and see each other regularly—on occasions that are called dates.
