colliery
Underground coal operation
A colliery is a coal mine together with its associated buildings and equipment—the shaft, processing facilities, and surface structures.
The term is more common in British than American English: The colliery closed in 1984, putting hundreds out of work.
Mining families lived in villages built around the colliery.
