ore

Smelter's raw material

Ore is rock or mineral from which a valuable substance, especially metal, can be extracted: iron ore, copper ore.

The term implies economic viability—material only counts as ore if it's worth mining.

By extension, ore sometimes refers to any raw material awaiting refinement: The manuscripts were ore waiting to be smelted into prose.
