scarring
Leaving permanent marks
Scarring is the formation of scar tissue, either literally on skin or figuratively on the psyche.
Physical scarring results from wounds, burns, or surgery: The accident left permanent scarring on her arms.
Emotional scarring describes lasting psychological damage: childhood trauma and its scarring effects.
As an adjective, scarring characterizes experiences that leave such marks: a scarring defeat, a scarring memory.
