pericarp
Seed's outer covering
Pericarp is the wall of a ripened fruit, the part that develops from the ovary wall and surrounds the seeds.
In fleshy fruits like peaches or cherries, the pericarp comprises distinct layers: the outer skin, the edible flesh, and the hard pit encasing the seed.
In dry fruits like nuts or grains, the pericarp forms a thin, sometimes papery covering.
The pericarp of a tomato includes both the skin and the juicy flesh beneath it.
