smallpox
Pustular disease, vanquished
Smallpox was a highly contagious viral disease marked by fever and a progressive skin rash that left severe scarring on survivors.
It killed roughly one-third of those infected.
Through a global vaccination campaign, smallpox became the first disease eradicated by human effort, with the last natural case occurring in 1977.
