light microscope
Lens-based magnifier
A light microscope uses visible light and optical lenses to magnify small objects, as opposed to electron microscopes that use beams of electrons.
It's the standard microscope found in biology classrooms and medical labs, capable of magnifying specimens up to about 1000 times their actual size: Students examined onion cells under the light microscope.
