stain
Mark that lingers
A stain is a discoloration left by a substance that has soaked into a surface: a coffee stain on the carpet, grass stains on her jeans.
The verb means to leave such a mark, or to color deliberately with dye or pigment: stain the deck.
Figuratively, a stain is something that damages reputation or character: a stain on his honor.
Stainless steel resists corrosion; a stainless record has no blemishes.
