working distance
Lens-to-specimen separation
Working distance is the space between a lens or instrument and the object being examined or photographed.
In microscopy, it's the gap between the objective lens and the specimen: High-magnification lenses have very short working distances.
The term matters when physical access is needed—for manipulating specimens, welding, or avoiding heat damage to optics.
