bacteria
Single-celled microorganisms
Bacteria are microscopic single-celled organisms found virtually everywhere—in soil, water, air, and living bodies.
Some cause disease; others are essential for digestion, decomposition, and ecological balance.
The word is technically plural (singular: bacterium), though the bacteria is spreading appears in casual speech.
Good bacteria in yogurt aid digestion.
