electron microscope
Subatomic imaging device
An electron microscope uses beams of electrons rather than light to magnify specimens, achieving far greater resolution than optical microscopes.
It can reveal structures at the molecular or atomic level—viruses, cell organelles, crystal lattices.
The two main types are transmission electron microscopes, which pass electrons through thin samples, and scanning electron microscopes, which bounce electrons off surfaces to create detailed three-dimensional images.
